Description
Medical Body Protected Area Electrical Inspection
Independent Inspection & Certification of Medical Patient Areas
Medical Body Protected Areas require specialised electrical inspection and certification to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance. Ultraflex Electrical provides independent inspections, verification, and expert advice for medical and healthcare environments.
When is Certification Required?
Certification by a registered Electrical Inspector is required for:
New electrical installations
Any alterations or additions
Repairs to an existing installation within a patient area
Ongoing Re-Verification
Re-verification of Body Protected Areas must be carried out at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
While this annual re-verification may be completed by a competent person, we strongly recommend engaging a registered Electrical Inspector who is experienced in medical patient areas, familiar with the requirements of AS/NZS 3003, and equipped with current, calibrated test equipment.
Using an Electrical Inspector provides greater confidence that the installation has been assessed correctly, test results are reliable, and compliance documentation will stand up to audit or review.
This aligns with:
Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010 – Regulation 75(3)
AS/NZS 3003:2011 Clause 1.4.9
Applicable Standards
All inspections and certification are completed in accordance with:
AS/NZS 3000 – Electrical Installations (Wiring Rules)
AS/NZS 3003 – Electrical Installations – Patient Areas
Body Protected vs Cardiac Protected Areas
Patient areas are classified as Body Protected Areas or Cardiac Protected Areas, each with specific electrical requirements for the electrical equipment within the area.
A patient area is any location where low-voltage medical electrical equipment is intended to be used on a patient. This does not include areas such as corridors or lifts where medical equipment is only used in emergencies or for patient transport.
Note: We currently provide inspection and certification services for Body Protected Areas only. Cardiac Protected Areas are not covered at this time.
